There is a way to dog proof coon size coiinbear traps so that they will still catch coon but not dogs.

You build a box to hold the trap just like a box cubby. The difference is that the box is fastened on a tree with the opening down and about 6 inches off the ground. The coon will be able to get to the trap but a dog will not be able to twist its way under the box and get into the trap.
