Are dogs afraid of thunder & lightening?

My dog Franklin is not a hunting dog. He's a 100lb black, Giant Schnauzer and quite a load when agitated. The other evening I was siting with him on my front steps. Lightening was raising merry olde hell, and I was about to go in the house when I noticed that Franklin who usually sits right next to me was almost hiding behind me. Are most dogs afraid of thunder and lightening? I personally don't have a clue. Best wishes.
