Silver maple wood?

Hi all;
I have a silver maple tree growing in my backyard, and I'd like to know if I can use the wood as skewers for small game, so I can could it over a spit. I guess what I really need to know is if the sap or anything else in the wood is dangerous to consume or if it will impart a bad taste in the meat.
