I am pretty sure that pistol is a blowback design, meaning the breechblock is not locked. The mass of the breech/slide and the force of the recoil spring keep the breech closed until most of the pressure in the bore drops. Then the slide opens to extract the empty case. But not all the pressure has dropped, so there is always some gas that escapes when the empty case comes out of the barrel.
What you were feeling was likely ash and unburnt powder kernels propelled by that released gas.
