If your service is ADVERTISED at 3mbps down, and you're getting 2.7 down, don't complain about your modem at all, that's great speeds. You'll NEVER get the whole 3mbps down, and 90% is pretty darn good. I would keep the supplied modem, because (unless they've come down a lot) one to purchase is gonna be cheap at about $100, and that's not with much of a warranty. The one supplied by the cable company will be replaced if it ever goes bad. For $3 a month (the cost of renting a cable modem from my company), it would take 2 1/2 years to make up what you'd be paying for the other, so it's not really that much. Oh, and don't think yours won't lose the signal just as much as one from a store. It will, they all do. Not sure the reasoning, but digital internet service (DSL and Cable) both lose signals a lot and you'll find yourself restarting modems a good bit.
