You've probably heard this by now, but the minister involved now says the letter was sent out by mistake by an assistant who had his head up his arse and didn't know what he was talking about.
He now says there is no movement to get rid of the Mini14 "at this time." (That last bit scares me, but anyways. . . .) So there ya go.
