			You might need to recrown the muzzle, but some old .22's can shoot as well as anything new off the shelf.  
		
		
		
		
		
		
			As for the name I duno how well Mossberg quality was over 50yrs ago? The best way to find out is to put a few hundred rounds through it. Try different types of ammo as well. Each individual rimfire likes different ammo. Sometimes the gun can be as picky as a names lot#, or it might eat anything ya feed it. If you get a new one I would suggest a Ruger 10/22 or a Savage. You might find some other used ones in the newspaper or swapsheet. Whatever you do, dont be in a hurry to buy. Their is always a deal to be found with rimfires.
