I grew up with an English Pointer and English Setter when I was really young. Did a ton of pheasant hunting back then too. After that, we got an English Springer Spaniel and still continued to do upland hunting until there was very few pheasants to hunt anymore. The last time I went hunting for wild pheasants was 20 years ago.
Now, Maryland has tons of waterfowl, deer, and turkey, so I hunt them and the labs are what I need for the waterfowl. About once a year, we "hunt" upland at one of these game preserves and my lab, Nitro, does just fine with that stuff. We mostly hunt quail because the pheasants come out as hamburger (i.e., we can all shoot pretty well).
Hope that explains the story, and just in case you were wondering, I have no idea why my dad picked all those English dogs when I was a kid.
