Need help with shore fishing in the Outer Banks

Has anybody done any shore fishing in the Outer Banks?

I am headed down there in a couple of days for 5 days and my brother, his girlfriend, and my wife want to do some fishing. Me, I want to go on a charter boat, but I don't think that is in the cards this time. So, I'll take what I can get. However, I have no idea what I am doing fishing from the shore. All of my recent fishing has been from a boat. What kind of bait should I use? What should I expect to catch? Can I use a trolling rod or a freshwater rod with a spinning reel on it? Help me out here guys.

I've only shore fished once in my life, and that was about 8 or 10 years ago. I think I remember catching a couple sun fish.

As for bait, I have not a clue. I would recommend (just a guess though) something live if at all possible, like crickets. Make SURE to rinse ALL of your gear (line, rig, fishing pole, everything) off after you finish fishing - the salt water isn't good for it. You're going to love the outerbanks. I was just up in Nags Head about 3 weeks ago on a family reunion. We had a blast. - David

Most of the folks around here use a long pole(10-12') with a heavier than usual weight or lures. I understand the purpose is to get your bait/lure way out there. Seen a lot of fisherman sling that thing a long ways. Then reel in just like normal. Never seen a lot caught however except during the striper(rock fish)runs then you can really slam them.
