For starters, you cannot just use any old oil or grease. You'll certainly stick a case in the sizing die.

There are a few more or less acceptable substitutes, but they are nowhere near as good as the real thing. (The best of the real thing being Imperial Sizing Die Wax, which you should buy or order ASAP.)

You can use a dab of pure anhydrous lanolin (available at some drug stores), or STP. The lanolin is better for your hands.

None require you to goop the stuff on. Just get your fingers slick with it and roll the case through those fingers a bit. Completely wash it off your hands before you touch a primer.
