The advise is the right one... get someone to help you transition.
I shoot longbows almost exclusively, but I do have a 75 pound canebreak, and two other recurves of 60 and 55 pounds respectively. I use wood arrows and shoot off the shelf with feather fletching that I attach with contact cement.
I use snuffers, bear (rarely anymore) Bodkins, MA's and zwickey glue on tips. I make my own strings from fastflight and make noise dampeners from 3/8" nylon braided cord... there is nothing quiter for strings.
That being said... carbons, aluminum, fiberglass, and wood, all shoot well from longbows and recurves... its up to you what to shoot and can shoot accurately. Its shot placement over EVERYTHING else that matters in Bowhunting....
