Like most of the (lucky!) youngsters back in Illinois in the 50s, farmers encouraged me to wander their hay fields and shooting every groundhog I could. My .22 worked - but not as well as a larger caliber would have. Had to be close, too.
Many was the hour I spent laying flat in the alfalfa or peeking out from behind a treetrunk until a g'hog peeped out. Many times there was nothing but a half head and an eyeball to shoot at. Got my share, though. If all I had were a rimfire, the .22 Mag would definitely be my choice. I'd pick the most accurate expanding bullet (no FMJs) from my rifle and do my best. But I'd MUCH rather have a Hornet.
