I shoot 2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2 inch in my 835.

My model 12 shoots either 2 3/4 of 3 inch with no problem.

The 3 inch stamping on the barrel just lets you know that it will take up to 3 inch but you can still shoot 2 3/4".
