If you want to spend the money a 3 1/2 x 10 VX 111 is as good as you can do. For a little less a 3 x 9 is an excellant choice. My AR wears a 3 x 9 Leupold and is always carried on 3 X. In fact I don`t think I`ve ever killed one with it on anything but 3 X. But I use it for up close and personal and when running them with dogs. It`s good for 275 to 300 yrds. Worry more about the low end of a varaible scope than the top end. The last deer I killed was with a muzzle loader with a 2 1/2 X scope at 289 yrds. lazered. It had been hit or I would not have shot, but I had a pleanty good point of aim for the shot.

thanks
have a Leupold VX III on my .280 A-bolt and love it. Its good out to a fair distance as well.
I'm a newbie to the varmint hunting so I'm just picking the brains of the "pros" before I invest in glass.
