Adam and Gil, When I was much younger I had both S&W and Colts in the 1917 versions.
All of the S&W I had had the shoulder to headspace against and could use 45 ACP without the clips. Yes, it took strong fingernails to unload the fired cases but I was young. I never had a Colt that had the shoulder, even though I heard they were out there. I currently have a S&W 1955 Target model and it will use either round, and I have many boxes of 45 'Auto Rim" to keep me out of trouble. Usually Star has 45AR brass.
