Besides a good cleaning, be sure to properly lube the rifle.

Three or four times every year lads come to the local gun club with CMP Garands. They blaze away and only one lubed the Garand before firing. The other rifles GRATE like a rusty hinge because they are so dry! "Wot? This needs lubing?" they say time and again.
