Peep sights for 22s
Guys,
Thanks for all the tips on fnding a low cost receiver sight for my rimfires. This post is to save the rest of you from the trouble I got into. Midway was the only supplier I could find that listed a receiver sight that mounts in the grooved receivers common to 22 rimfires (made by Willams). It looked like what I wanted and it was ON SALE! I ordered one in spite of the ridiculous shipping charges. The insructions said some light filing might be needed and I had to do a small amount to fit the sight to the receiver grooves on my old Remington Nylon 66 semi-auto. I also tried to put it on my grandson's Marlin 15Y single-shot bolt rifle but too much filing was required and I gave up. Then to the range with the Nylon 66 for testing. Groups were over a foot high at 25-yards with the sight in its lowest setting. The instructions say this might be a problem and recommend installing taller front sights. This was supposed to be an easy and inexpensive project and I'm not willing to do any more. Lesson learned: If you want a peep sight on your 22 rifle, buy one specifically for the model of rifle you have. Or -- be willing to do some gunsmithing and/or install higher front sights. Another possibility is to pick up a used "target-type" rifle that comes with receiver sights installed. Thankfully, that was one of my "goof-ups" that didn't cost much. 270man |
