RR,
Thanks for the response, thought I might have missed something. My conclusion was the same, that the bullets are no longer in production. Best, Ed

He'll do fine petey, wouldn't hesitate to let youngster who can shoot use a plain ole soft point 55 gr, wouldn't reccomend the polymer tipped ones though. at close range with strict instructions for a lung shot 223's do fine.
![]() This was a 55 gr sp from a 9 twist remmy 7615, the deer was about 80 yards broadside, I instructed the daughter to hold just behind the front shoulder for the simple reason its where I would have shot cause its a bigger target and because I do not remember what shooting was like before tobacco, caffiene, and alcahol put the smack down on my CNS. Any ways, she aimed a bit! BANG!, deer fell over. she was elated, knew something was up, she had that look on her face. we find this ![]() Well I had to do something, she didn't follow instructions so I began. You do know that the brain is the absolutely smallest killing target on a whitetail don't you, and you know what would have happened if you pulled off just a bit? Her head cocked off to the side, a hand went to her hip, "Daddy, the crosshairs settled there, the shot felt good, I knew I could hit where I aimed. and besides, you make me shoot squirrels in the head and they're way smaller!" OK, I was out of the fight so I said let me show ya how to gut them, her response was "thats what I thought I brought you along for!" Just like her mother! RR

Nice shooting to the young lady! I've done it a time or two, but usually when I had no other viable option. If she was able to pull it off - well, just tell her there's a better option and hope she takes it to heart before one of those shots goes wrong. It ain't pretty when it does, even if you're able to "clean it up" with a quick second shot. JMHO

I have shot many deer with a 233. I have used Blackhills 68 gr reman ammo and have had lots of success. Neck shots and lung shots were the norm. Both shot out of AR type rifles with 1X9 and 1X8 bbls. I have moved up to 75 gr BTHP bullets and have been shooting hogs with them. You shoot them behind the shoulder and they run, but not that far. If you have an AR and a 10 rnd mag with the heavier bullets, you can do a whole lot of damage.

Here's the finished product. The boy is putting together 1.5 - 2" groups at 100 yards out of the stand. Basically the same environment we'll be hunting out of. He's got over 100 rounds out of this gun so far and still impressing me - for a 6 yr old that is!
The final load with my 1/12 twist is 53 gr Barnes TSX shooting 28.5 gr of BL-C(2). I'm planting 3/8" groups with this load. The 60 grain partitions were givin me around 3/4" - 1/2" groups no matter what I tried, Plus the point of impact is almost the same with the Barnes (within 1/2") as the current 55 gr balistic tips. I have him shooting those for practice, as they aren't as expensive to load. $32 for 50 Barnes Tripple Shocks! Switched out tubes to a 3x9 Bushnell with a nice little reticle that I believe is helping him out quite a bit. In reality his shots will be less than 50 and I have a toad of a buck tracked down for him...if I don't take it in archery here. Yesterday I had 5 bucks from 3 yards to 62 yards all at one time. I think finding him a buck won't be the problem...it's going to be dragging it out! I'm not sure he'll be much help in that arena ha ha ![]()

Petey, I hav'nt killed bucks with .223,but have with .218 BEE,25-20 and know of property owners who use .22mag wrf for inside of 100yds around areas to keep noise down.[Legal season, cartrige not]
Savage/Stevens now use 1-10 twist barrels, and Bullets I've used and loaded are: 53 tripple shock,60 nozler part,65sgk[not used on game yet].I have used w748,and when other powders are gone will be 100% varget[I just load 25 gr for 52-70 gr and go with it]which works well for highpower loads in ar. I know we have blacktail deer, but I just can't bring myself to go for the behind the shoulder shot when you can have a going away neck shot, and drop them in their tracks.I've only crippled one buck in my life, and I was going for behind the shoulder in the oaks, and using a 7x57 mau;so I can't blame the caliber. On the standing or bed shots,I prefer to snipe themin neck or back of head.CAUTION: Head shots facing can result in shot off jaw and lots of work.I've seen 100gr .243 bullets fail on shoulder shots ie bone, and if shoulder shots and close range are issues I prefer a 45-70 which will go thru both shoulders and use bone for secondary projectiles;and much less damage due to velocity. |
