Question What Are the Most Popular Rifles Used In Alaska?

I haven't had the opportunity to hunt Alaska yet, but I would like as much input as possible as to which rifles, calibers, and styles of rifles are the most widely used in Alaska.

Thanks,
Cherokee Cowboy

Personally, I use a Stainless Ruger 338Win Mag or my Sako 375 H&H. On occasion I will use my Browning or custom made 30-06. If I was to choose one rifle from my collection to hunt with here in Alaska, I would take my 338 Ruger Stainless over the rest. I plan on picking up one of those new WSM in a Stainless 300mag sometime in the near future. No matter which caliber you choose, I think most everyone here would agree that a stainless is the most practical for the weather we have here in Alaska.

A while ago (about 2 years) a study was done at the local shooting range here in Los anchorage. These are the results, please keep in mind this might not represent all of alaska since most of the shooters were us city slickers.

ALASKA TOP TEN CARTRIDGES
Cartridge # of Hunters %
.30-06 387 20.9
.300 Win. Mag. 342 18.5
.338 Win. Mag. 339 18.4
7mm Rem. Mag. 157 8.5
.375 H&H Mag. 116 6.3
.270 Win. 108 5.8
.308 Win. 65 3.5
.300 Weath. Mag. 64 3.5
45-70 Gov. 25 1.4
.280 Rem. 20 1.1

As a 1 gun battery for alaska, wolverine is right. You cant beat a good stainless 338winny.

You can read the article here.

I personnally use a 270, 45/70 and a 458Lott for all my hunting.

In my area, I would have to agree with you guys as everyone for the most part use a .338Win. or .300Win. A couple of guides on the AK Peninsula that I know use .375H&H, .458Win & Lott. I shoot a .338Win.

I concur from here in Fairbanks too. 30.06, .338, .300 Win are the three most shot by my friends. I do shoot a .270 Weatherby magnum a lot myself but also carry the others mentioned.

Cool

Well, I'm a Ruger fan. But I have used over 136 different firearm/cartridge combinations ranging from 243 on up to 500 AHR. Have used Bolt guns, lever guns, single shot rifle and pistol, revolvers, pumpguns and semi-autos. But I alway keep going back to a Ruger and will always have one in the cabinet. 338 is my favorite caliber with the 358 caliber running a close second.
