.30-30

In Alaska in the early 1950's I've seen moose, black bear and one Brownie taken with Winchester and Marlin .30-30's. I also saw a huge Kenai moose taken with a single shot from an old museum piece and if IIRC was a .25-20. These were all taken by native hunters who used what ever they had.

BTW, they're good walrus guns, too, and some of those big, old "beachmasters" are well padded and huge.

Isn't a 30-30 what Teddy Roosevelt toted?

I though I read that somewhere, but could be mistaken.

I shot my first bull elk with a .30-30 along with 2 or 3 moose.

It will work if the shooter can hit where he aims and the ranges are kept modest, like under 75 yards.

When I draw my cow elk tag here in Oregon I always use my old 30/30 with iron sights.

danny pay,

The biggest thing that I ever read about was a Coastal Brown Grizzly, that a hunter got at about 15 ft. (I think, was realy close, is all that I remember).

I don't remember all of the facts from that article, but I think it was one of the largest ever taken on the record.

If I can find that article again in my library I'll reread and post an update.

Some time ago, I read the story of the last Grizzly bear killed in Idaho (before they came back). The bear was shot and wounded by a guy shooting, I believe, an '06.

A local boy then went after him into the brush with a 30/30 and killed him.

I think I might have passed on that opportunity. Dutch.

A buddy of mine that is Helping me get into reloading & showing me the ropes is shooting a Wildcat load out of his 30.30. He does alot of Crop Damage Deer Kill's for the State. He is using 39.2 gr. of Win. Powder and a XTP Pistol bullet on top of it, Im not sure on the Grain of the XTP. I helped him load up a few hundred of them, and we then went to the Range. He is shooting them out to 200 yds. in a 1.5 in. group. I know he does all Headshot's on the Deer taken, Has been very very effective with it too.

Back a few years when we didn't know any better, me and a friend took So. CO elk every year with either his Marlin 336 30-30 or my old .32 Win Spec. in a Win Mod. 64. Simpler times they were.......the words "ultra-magnum" hadn't even been dreamt about yet.

I've personally never killed anything with a 30-30 but I would imagine that in the day quite a few buffalo lost their lives to the 30-30 Winchester at close range
