I think it's another "assault weapon" round. In other words, it's of medium or even lower power than battle rifle ammo. If you think the 7.62x39 is a suitable hunting round, then the 6.8 will fill your bill, too.
For some folks, that'll be the case. Not everyone needs something as powerful as a 30-06 or 270. The 30-30 (and similar rounds) still fill a lot of people's needs just fine. But as a general-purpose, do-all? Nah.
