I use Hotwire.com a lot to find good places to stay. You get to pick a price in a given area, with all the amenities displayed. You pay in advance and then they reveal the name of the place.
Your fee is non-refundable, but in return you get very nice rooms at about half price. I've stayed in Candlewood suites (full kitchen and LOTS of goodies free) for $35 a night, as an example. That was in Phoenix, where even a dumpy Motel 6 is $50 a night!
