It depends on the area you will be hunting in that most pheasant country in my State does not have the prickly stuff that will hurt the dog.
Western SD in certain parts boots would be a good idea.
Best advice on the soft pads problem is conditioning the dog before the season gets here. There are also products you can put on the dogs pads that will help some.
I have boots and they save the dogs feet in some areas and they are like anything else that they have to get used to.
