I've never personally had the need for anything like that. I use GAIM for all of my IMing needs, although it goes through the internet.
I recommend taking a look at sourceforge.net. It's all open source stuff over there, and sometimes you can come across some good programs. I ran a search, and found this as one of the results: http://sourceforge.net/projects/newpopper It might be worth looking at, although I've never used it. Good luck, David
