You should have no problem catching rats on the bottom of the runs. They usually shoot downs these runs when leaving the dens.

On way I used to set deep water runs was to split a 1 1/4 inch sapling of the needed length about 16 inches up the heavy end. Slide the spring ring up the split and wire off the the end of the sapling. With the trap set you can push the sapling in the mud so the trap sets on the bottom of the run.

In Michigan we used to have to be at least 6 foot from a den hole to set a trap. With this method I could set traps in the runs in 6 foot deep water with ease
