Good post Watchmaker. I agree that in most cases in the states Leupold is good glass for most hunting, I've got a few. I would add though that in low light you will lose a fine crosshair and hence no sight to reference. Leupold will put in heavy reticles, I had them put in a Nr. 1 for me, though it will remain the same size thru the entire power changes.

Since I do a lot of night hunting, I replaced a Schmidt & Bender 3-12 x 50 for a Swarovoski 3-12x50 with an illuminated dot, adjustable for brightness. It works excellent.

You've got a good system too for that 742!! For drive hunts, I've got a Bushnell Holosight on a Rem 7400, and a Leupold 2-7 in my rucksack, both on or off with the Leupold Quick Release Rings. Depending on if I'm in tight brush or more in the open decides what I put on, only takes a minute. Waidmannsheil, Dom.
