Steve Forbes was pushing the flat tax idea a number of years ago. By his estimation, it would have been about 17 %, and that sounded ok to a lot of people.
Then a few independent groups checked the math  Turns out the flat tax would have to be about 33-34 % to equal the revenue stream we have coming in now...suddenly, the flat tax idea faded away.
