I think the Savage model 24 is one of the most versatile guns ever made. I got one for my son - the .22 LR over 20 ga. model - as his first gun when he was about 6. I also bought one of their Fourtenner adapters so he could shoot .410s until he was big enough to handle the 20 ga. He still uses it on occasion although the stock is now a little short for his 6'-1" frame.

I liked his so well that I got one (the same combination) for me. I mounted a 4X scope on mine with see-thru mounts. It is a great squirrel gun. When I squirrel hunt during deer season I stoke the bottom barrel with 3" no. 3 buckshot. I killed a coyote with that same buckshot load this past season. The biggest one I have seen around here. I'll usually also carry 3" no. 4 turkey loads when turkeys are in, using the shotshell sleeve I fit over the butstock. I can't think of a more versatile gun. At least here in Virginia I could take any game - large or small - with just this one gun. The .22 barrel is also plenty accurate enough for squirrels out to about 50 yds. I killed my largest groundhog last year with the .22 barrel while sitting overlooking my friend's vegetable garden.

Evidently other folks must like them too as around here, if you can find them at all, they bring a premium price.
