Years ago, Mel Tappen broke it down to 'working guns', and 'defense guns'. I think those distinctions still are valid.
To me, a survival gun would be several, and include a .22 revolver or semi auto, and a heavier caliber revolver for hunting. I would want a .45 1911 for defense.
