Cool Remington 700 magazine length

Had a 700BDL a few years ago in 7mm-08 and finally got rid of it because the internal magazine length was not long enough for me to suitably reload the heavier/ longer 7mm bullets that I wanted to shoot in this caliber/gun combination. However, I have really missed this gun and its accuracy level and moderate recoil and would like to buy another one someday. Can someone with reloading exp. in this gun/caliber combination tell me if this situation has or has not been corrected by Remington? Also, even if this situation has been corrected is the throat in the newer 700BDLs long enough to handle these heavier bullets? Someone is probably asking 'what bullets'. Here are some I tried in which I had to seat them too deep into the case for my liking and simply could not crimp on the cannelure: speer 160gr. MagTip, hornady 154gr. spire point - at that point I gave up on the 700 as I knew I was fighting a losing battle!! Can someone give me some really updated and specific information on this situation today in the Remington 700 BDL? Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Exclamation Did you possibly ever consider having the barreled receiver "blue printed" the way

you wanted it? There used to be a gun smithing company in Meridian, Idaho (outside of Boise) who could've opened the magazine and throat for you. They do this regularly with SA M700's and Model Sevens in .284 Win and 7mm-08 Rem. Can't remember at the moment their name, but a thorough search on the internet or inquiries to the Boise area might turn them up. When I spoke to the several years ago, they are VERY favorably impressed with the cartidges above. The purpose in opening the magazines was to accomodate heavier longer bullets.

In my VLS .308 I had the same problem as you. Being restricted to Factory OAL. It turns out that 110gr V-Max bullets seated at Factory OAL worked extremely well. But, I would still be interested in having the well extended a bit for those longer Palma and 168gr bullets.

Brant, do you know the name of that shop?

Exclamation Look on the web - "Intermountain Arms Gunsmithing Meridian Idaho"

They have a "1-888-" number. Tell them what your concern is and how can they help you? Tell them you heard they do some really "innovative things with the .284 Winchester and 7mm-08 Remington in the Model Seven and short M700." It appears they have really expanded their sporting goods retail side of the business, but hopefully they still do custom work. It appears they are certified to be a repair center for several big-name gun makers/manufacturers. Don't forget to ask them about other custom gunsmithing in the Boise/Nampa/Meridian, Idaho area too. If you manage to talk to the right "smith," maybe he can tell you what a "smith" in your area needs to do to help you instead of having to ship your rifle off so far from home. Good luck!

I live five minutes from intermountain arms. They were the only game in town for awhile. As far as sending them your gun I would'nt .They are just going to send it out as they have no shop on the premise. There business really got hurt by a place called sportsmans wharehouse.Once we found out how they have been over charging all us hunters I've shifted all of my business elsewhere.Small world we live in.We have alot of great smiths in my area, all I had to do was look for them.

Talking Helloooo Mike! Ever been to Bob Shapel's gun shop there in Boy-see?

Have you or anyone you know had Shapel's do any work? How did you like them? Thanks for the heads-up about Intermountain Arms! I'll be absolutely certain to really go out of my way and shop there on my next trip thru Spudaho - NOT! Does Sportsman Warehouse do a good job for everyone? A cousin of mine who lives in Salt Lake City shops at a Sportsman Warehouse; nice store! Wonder if its the same folks?

Buckeye,

Remington has not made any allowances in the
short action to solve the problem. If you want
short action that is what you get and have to
live with the bullet seated deep inside the case.

You might consider what I did when, like you,
I sold my 7mm/08 because the magazine was
not long enough. At a gun show I found a
.30/06 real cheap but the stock was still goo.
I had a stainless steel custom barrel put
on the gun, chamber it in 7mm/08 and now with the long action allows me to put those long bullets
out in the neck and not inside the case body taking up valuable powder space. Solved my problem and I couln't be happier with the 7mm/08.
