As a general rule, always use the exact primer specified in the reloading data manual. Primers vary in both physical dimensions and brisance (explosive potential). Switching them indiscriminately can lead to unexpected results.

That said, if you don't have the primer specified, you can usually use one of a similar type. Match both the size AND the brisance level. Example: substitute CCI 200 large rifle standard for Federal 210 large rifle standard. Likewise a magnum for another magnum.

If you do so, you MUST begin with Start-level loads, and you might or might not safely achieve anything like "book" numbers for either maximum charge or velocity. Changing the primer makes the data a crapshoot.

NEVER substitute primers in a previously worked-up charge/load without going back to Start-level loads.
